Our name, Pumba Reisen, reflects both our spirit and our purpose. “Pumba,” inspired by the joyful and adventurous African warthog also known locally as Kasongo symbolizes resilience, curiosity, and the freedom to explore without fear. It represents the playful yet determined character of true African adventure. “Reisen,” the German word for travel, highlights our strong connection with international guests, particularly from Europe, and our role as a cultural bridge between Tanzania and the world. Together, the name Pumba Reisen expresses who we are: approachable, experienced, and deeply rooted in Africa while welcoming travelers from across the globe.

Meet the Founder

William Laizer

William Laizer is the Founder of Pumba Reisen and a lifelong professional of Mount Kilimanjaro whose journey began on the mountain in 1994. Starting his career as a porter and later qualifying as a certified mountain guide in 2006, he gained deep, firsthand knowledge of Tanzania’s landscapes, tourism industry, and the realities behind every successful climb and safari. Since living in Germany from 2009, William has organized and guided journeys to Tanzania for international travelers, especially German-speaking guests, acting as a bridge between cultures and continents.

Pumba Reisen was founded from his conviction that travel should do more than move people from place to place—it should help fulfill dreams, create meaningful experiences, and open Africa to the world in a responsible and authentic way. His vision ensures that every safari, climb, and journey is carefully crafted to turn travelers’ dreams of Africa into unforgettable, life-changing experiences.
