The Usambara Mountains are a breathtaking range in northeastern Tanzania, known for their lush tropical rainforests and open grassy plains. Dotted with vibrant villages, this region offers a rich cultural experience alongside its natural beauty. Located about 110 km west of Tanga and roughly a three-hour drive, the mountains sit near Mkomazi National Park, making them easily accessible yet blissfully off the beaten path.
Often described as one of Tanzania’s hidden gems, Usambara is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking peace in the outdoors. The range’s cool, refreshing climate is perfect for long walks and treks through forests, hills, and fertile farmland. One of the biggest highlights of hiking in the Usambara Mountains is the incredible scenery: sweeping valleys, rolling hills, terraced farms, colorful local markets, and panoramic views at every turn.
Geologically, the Usambara Mountains form the easternmost portion of the Eastern Arc Mountains, an ancient mountain chain rich in biodiversity. Stretching about 90 km in length and nearly half as wide, the range was formed through faulting and uplifting around two million years ago and is made up of ancient Precambrian metamorphic rock.
