Tips
Since we are often asked what we consider appropriate tips, we have compiled a list. The following figures are only our recommendations and not guidelines you must adhere to. Ultimately, you decide how much you want and can give.
But
First, a few words about income and finances in Tanzania:
For the porters, cook, and mountain guide who accompany you, the mountain tours are usually their only source of income, and they have to support an entire family with it.
Life in Tanzania is not cheap. Basic foodstuffs cost the same in Tanzania as in Germany (1 kg of sugar costs €2, 1 kg of flour costs €2, 1 liter of milk costs €2). Education in Tanzania is also very expensive. There is no health or retirement provision for the average citizen.
We pay our employees significantly better than most other companies, without affecting your wallet – since we don’t make a profit. However, this salary is not enough to support our employees throughout the year. For one thing, we often have very small groups, and for another, Kilimanjaro cannot be climbed all year round.
The following recommendations for tips on the mountain apply to the entire group. This means, for example, if we recommend giving a porter a tip of €7-10 per day, that you all pool your money together and they receive this amount once, not from everyone in the group!
When distributing tips, it is important to adhere to a staggered system. This means that the mountain guide gets more than the cook, who gets more than the porters…
There are always some porters who do more than the others. There will be porters who regularly serve you meals and others who go to the summit with you. Those who do extra work should also get a little more than those who “just” carry things.
Your mountain guide will be happy to explain who has which function.
The helpers are more pleased to receive tips in euros, but if you don’t want to carry that much extra cash, they will of course also be happy to receive shillings!
Carrier: 7-10 € / day
Cook: 10-15 € / day
Mountain guide:15-20 € / day
The total costs would be €610-910. That would be €152.50-227.50 per tourist.
We know this is a significant additional cost on top of an already expensive trip. But we think it’s reasonable, especially considering the cost of the entire trip.
We’d also like to point out that just for a one-day stay in Kilimanjaro National Park, you pay $120 per person in park fees. Unfortunately, this money disappears entirely into the government, and no one knows what happens to it.
And perhaps this additional expense hurts less when you know that the people we employ can really use the money to feed their families
