Mount Hanang

Tour Overview

Mount Hanang is one of Tanzania’s hidden hiking gems, offering a less-traveled, adventurous climb with incredible views and cultural experiences.

About Mount Hanang
  • Height: 3,420 meters (11,220 feet)

  • Location: Hanang District, Manyara Region, northern Tanzania

  • Rank: 4th highest mountain in Tanzania

  • Nearby Town: Katesh (serves as the base for climbers)

Why Climb Mount Hanang?
  • Offers a non-touristy experience

  • Interacts with Barbaig communities, a semi-nomadic tribe

  • Amazing sunrise views, wildlife sightings, and bird watching

  • Great for trekkers seeking a challenge without the crowds of Kilimanjaro or Meru

At 3,417 m above sea level, it is the fourth highest mountain in Tanzania and the southernmost volcanic cone in the Rift Valley. It is believed that Mt Hanang last erupted more than 4 million years ago.
‍ A one-and-a-half
-hour drive south of Babati, near Tarangire National Park, the green, forested mountain rises from the plains. Not many tourists find their way here, which only makes the mountain seem more charming. From the summit, there are magnificent panoramic views across the expanse of Africa.

Two main routes lead to the summit: the steeper route from Giting and the slightly longer but not quite as steep route from Katesh.
Well-trained hikers can conquer the mountain in a day. However, there is a gain of almost 2,000 m, and the final stretch to the summit is along a ridge, which requires careful attention and surefootedness.
It is also possible to climb Mt Hanang in two days, spending the night in a tent just 300 meters below the summit.
The
mountain is an excellent warm-up and acclimatization trip before climbing Kilimanjaro, or for those interested in going on a beautiful hike in Tanzania without encountering many other tourists. Climbing the mountain can also be combined with a boat safari on Lake Babati or a safari in the Tarangire and Ngorongoro national parks , etc.

We are of course happy to organize travel to and from Arusha/Moshi, accommodation, a mountain guide, and everything else that goes with it.
We are also happy to combine offers with climbing Kilimanjaro , a safari through the various national parks, or a visit to the beautiful island of Zanzibar .
