Information On Malaria Prophylaxis
The most important malaria prophylaxis is mosquito protection!!!
Therefore, you should always wear long sleeves in malaria-prone areas, especially during dusk, mornings, and evenings. Using mosquito spray (such as Autan) and sleeping under a mosquito net (check for holes—mosquitoes always find them!) are other important and sensible measures
In our opinion, the drug prophylaxis for Tanzania is absolutely necessary in Germany and is covered by health insurance:
The three most popular medications for malaria prophylaxis are Malarone, Lariam, and doxycycline.
a) Malarone
Advantage: Very well tolerated and very effective
Disadvantages: Most expensive medication, must be taken daily.
b) Lariam
Advantage: Taken only once a week. Relatively inexpensive medication.
Disadvantages: Relatively common neuropsychiatric side effects, such as dizziness, insomnia, panic attacks, and depression. These are particularly common if similar episodes have occurred in the past.
c) Doxycycline
Advantage: Cheapest medication
Disadvantages: Photosensitization (not recommended for people with already sensitive skin), frequent gastrointestinal side effects, daily administration required.
Please
consult a travel doctor before traveling (available at every health department). They can provide you with individualized advice, prescribe malaria prophylaxis, and, if necessary, recommend vaccinations. The costs are usually covered by health insurance!
