6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Adventure
Mount Kilimanjaro Trek Marangu Route (Coca-Cola Route)
Tour Overview
Price Start From $1650 Per Person, 2 Pax
The Marangu Route is the most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro and remains the only route offering overnight stays in permanent mountain huts. This provides a more comfortable and structured trekking experience, especially during cold or wet weather.
This 6-day itinerary is specifically designed to improve acclimatization through gradual elevation gain and a full acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. The route ascends through four major ecological zones rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The same trail is used for ascent and descent, making navigation straightforward while still delivering a rewarding and iconic Kilimanjaro experience.
Detailed Trek Itinerary
Elevation: 1,970m → 2,720m
Distance: ~8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation Zone: Montane Rainforest
The trek begins at Marangu Gate after park registration and equipment checks. The trail ascends gently through dense rainforest, where the air is humid and the path is shaded by tall trees and thick vegetation. This zone is rich in wildlife, and sightings of monkeys and forest birds are common.
The pace on this first day is deliberately slow, allowing your body to begin adjusting to altitude while conserving energy. The trail is well maintained, with gradual slopes that make the hike comfortable even for first-time trekkers. By mid-afternoon, you reach Mandara Hut, located just above the forest line, where you rest and prepare for higher elevations.
Elevation: 2,720m → 3,720m
Distance: ~12 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
After leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape opens dramatically into moorland. Vegetation becomes lower and sparser, dominated by heather, grasses, and the first sightings of giant lobelias and groundsels unique to Kilimanjaro.
As altitude increases, the air becomes noticeably cooler and thinner. Clear views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Summit begin to dominate the horizon, offering motivation for the journey ahead. The trail gradually climbs across rolling terrain, making this a longer but manageable trekking day. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you take a short acclimatization walk before resting, helping your body adapt to the increased elevation.
Elevation: 3,720m (hikes up to ~4,000m)
Distance: 5–7 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
This day plays a critical role in summit success. Rather than gaining significant altitude, you focus on allowing your body to adjust. After breakfast, you hike slowly toward Zebra Rocks or in the direction of Kibo Hut, gaining altitude without sleeping higher.
The purpose of this day is to stimulate acclimatization while avoiding fatigue. Symptoms of altitude, if any, are monitored closely by your guide. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying expansive views of Mawenzi’s rugged peaks. This extra day greatly increases comfort and confidence ahead of the summit attempt.
Elevation: 3,720m → 4,720m
Distance: ~10 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
The trail now enters the alpine desert zone, where vegetation almost completely disappears. You cross the Saddle, a wide and stark plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo, exposed to wind and sun.
This is a psychologically challenging day due to the barren scenery and rising altitude, even though the trail is not steep. The pace remains slow and deliberate, conserving energy for summit night. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the final ascent, which begins later that night.
Elevation: 4,720m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Distance: ~6 km ascent / ~15 km descent
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours ascent / 5–6 hours descent
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert / Arctic Zone
Summit day begins shortly after midnight. Equipped with headlamps, you climb slowly through loose volcanic scree toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m). The cold temperatures, darkness, and thin air make this the most demanding section of the trek.
After a short rest at Gilman’s Point, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, where glaciers and sweeping views reward your effort. After photos and celebration, you begin a long descent back to Kibo Hut and then continue down to Horombo Hut. Descending brings rapid relief as oxygen levels increase, though the day is long and requires endurance.
Elevation: 3,720m → 1,970m
Distance: ~20 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland → Rainforest
The final day is a steady descent through moorland and back into dense rainforest. As altitude decreases, breathing becomes easier and the air warms. The trail can be slippery at lower elevations, especially after rain.
At Marangu Gate, you officially sign out of the park and receive your summit certificate, marking the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro climb. You are then transferred back to your hotel, bringing this unforgettable adventure to a close.
