6-Day Kilimanjaro Trek Machame Route

Tour Overview

Price Start From  $1800 Per Person, 2 Pax

The Machame Route, widely known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Designed for trekkers seeking a balance between adventure, beauty, and effective acclimatization, this route is more demanding than the Marangu Route but offers far superior landscapes and a true wilderness trekking experience.

Unlike Marangu, where accommodation is in mountain huts, the Machame Route is entirely tent-based, allowing trekkers to fully immerse themselves in the mountain environment. The route traverses a remarkable variety of ecosystems from lush tropical rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit zone. Because of its longer distance and excellent acclimatization profile, the Machame Route boasts an approximate summit success rate of 80%, making it one of the most successful routes on Kilimanjaro despite its physical challenges.

This trek is ideal for adventurous hikers with a reasonable level of fitness who want to experience Kilimanjaro in its most dramatic and visually striking form.

How to Reach the Starting Point

On the morning of your trek, you will be collected from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha and transferred by vehicle to Machame Gate, located on the southwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes and passes through Machame Village, a fertile agricultural area famous for its banana and coffee plantations.

Upon arrival at the gate, your guides will complete park registration and final equipment checks while you prepare for the journey ahead. This is also where you meet your full mountain crew, including porters and the chef, before officially entering Kilimanjaro National Park.

Detailed Trek Itinerary

  • Elevation: 1,830m to 3,000m
  • Distance: 11 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Montane Rainforest

The trek begins with a gradual ascent through dense tropical rainforest, one of the most biologically rich zones on the mountain. Tall trees, moss-covered branches, and colourful birdlife surround the trail, creating a cool and shaded environment. The path winds steadily uphill along a ridge and can be muddy and slippery, especially after rainfall, making trekking poles and gaiters highly recommended.

This first day allows your body to begin adjusting to altitude while maintaining a comfortable pace. In the late afternoon, you arrive at Machame Camp, nestled within the forest. After settling into camp, you enjoy a hot dinner prepared by your mountain chef and your first night sleeping under the stars on Kilimanjaro.

  • Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland

After breakfast, the forest begins to thin as the trail climbs steadily into heather and moorland terrain. The air becomes cooler and drier, and the landscape opens, offering your first expansive views of the mountain and surrounding plains.

The route crosses a small valley and follows a rocky ridge before emerging onto the vast Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera. This shorter trekking day is intentionally designed to support acclimatization. You arrive at Shira Camp early in the afternoon, allowing time to rest, explore the plateau, and enjoy the dramatic sunset views before dinner and overnight at camp.

    • Elevation: 3,800m → 4,630m → 3,986m
    • Distance: 11 km
    • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
    • Vegetation Zone: Semi-desert

This is one of the most important days for altitude acclimatization. From the Shira Plateau, the trail gradually ascends eastward toward the imposing Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly barren, with dramatic rock formations and wide, open views.

After reaching the high point of the day at approximately 4,630 meters, you descend to Barranco Camp, located in a sheltered valley beneath the towering Barranco Wall. Although you finish the day at a similar elevation to where you started, this “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves your body’s ability to adapt to the altitude. Barranco Camp is widely regarded as one of the most scenic camps on the mountain.

  • Elevation: 3,900m to 4,600m
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Hiking Time: ~8 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, you tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that requires light scrambling and careful footwork. Once at the top, you are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The trail continues through the Karanga Valley, where you stop for lunch, before ascending gradually toward Barafu Camp. This day completes the Southern Circuit, providing changing perspectives of the summit throughout the hike. Upon arrival at Barafu, you rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare mentally and physically for the summit attempt later that night.

  • Elevation: 4,600m to 5,895m → 3,100m
  • Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent

Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, typically between midnight and 2:00 AM. Equipped with headlamps, you slowly ascend through loose volcanic scree toward Stella Point, the crater rim. This is the most physically and mentally demanding section of the entire trek.

At Stella Point, you take a short rest and witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. From here, the final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, follows a snow-dusted trail along the crater rim. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch.

Despite the fatigue, descending allows oxygen levels to increase rapidly, and relief is felt almost immediately. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

  • Elevation: 3,100m to 1,830m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Rainforest

The final day involves a steady descent through lush rainforest, often accompanied by mist or light rain. At Mweka Gate, you officially sign out of the park and receive your summit certificate, a proud reminder of your achievement.

A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha or Airport, where a hot shower and well-earned rest await.
