7-Day Machame Route Trek Overview

Tour Overview

The Machame Route, known for its scenic views and diverse habitats, is one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The seven-day trek offers a well-paced itinerary, allowing ample time for acclimatization, especially on the crucial day from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp, which is split into two days. This approach provides a more relaxed schedule before the challenging summit push, ensuring climbers are well-rested before the final ascent.

After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey with a scenic 3-hour drive from Arusha to Machame Gate. Here, your adventure begins as you enter the lush Montane Forest. The trail ascends along a ridge, with muddy and slippery sections, so trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended. After approximately 5-6 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Machame Camp for your overnight stay.

This section provides magnificent views and offers a chance to adjust to the higher altitude.

Your trek takes you to the Lava Tower (4,650m / 15,250ft), also known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Afterward, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp for your overnight stay. Although you descend to a similar elevation, this day is crucial for acclimatization as it helps your body prepare for the summit push.
